Hello!

What is Ladies' Lab Night?
Ladies' Lab Night is an event where we invite young women in the Portland community who are interested in science to meet with the women doing research in PSU’s biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and engineering labs. Attendees are able to learn about the amazing work the women in science at PSU are doing, make valuable connections, and see what a career in science might look like.
Who can come?
Everyone! This event is all gender inclusive and everyone is encouraged to bring their non-female friends and family along. We want to have everyone have respect for the wide diversity of people who make up the scientific community!
The event is open to all ages, but we respectfully ask you to leave your younger children (ages 9 or below) at home. The labs you will be touring are filled with large, fragile equipment, and lots of glass! So for safety and liability reasons, we want to avoid any mishaps caused by your extra-curious little ones. Children ages 10-13 (5th-8th grade) have the opportunity to register for a hands-on STEM activity as part of the Engineering Block programming. If you/your child are interested in an activity, please sign up using the RSVP at the bottom of the page. Activities are capped at 15 participants. Thank you for understanding!

Ladies' Lab Night 2019
The main event meeting area will be in Hoffman Hall, where our keynote speaker, Dr. Karin Rodland, will be presenting. From there, attendees will make their way to each of the four sessions, which will be held in different areas on the Portland State University campus. Each lab represented will have some information about what they do, be it a poster, 3D printed models, or even live experiments, and all of the researchers sharing their work, both graduate and undergraduate, will be women.
The event space is located at one end of Portland State's Walk of the Heroines. |
New to this year's Ladies' Lab Night are sessions held at the Engineering Building. Due to the distance between the Engineering Building and other buildings on campus, we suggest attending Sessions A and B (Block 1) at the Engineering Building and Sessions C and D (Block 2) at other labs, or vice versa.
During these sessions, participants can see where real science gets done, learn more about the research the labs does, and get a more in depth view of the life of a scientist. Please ask questions while you're here! We encourage curiosity. |
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Karin Rodland is Director of the Precision Medicine Innovation CoLaboratory at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a collaboration with OHSU that is dedicated to transforming the science and practice of precision medicine through the application of cutting edge technologies to novel clinical trial designs.
She was among the first to demonstrate that variations in extracellular calcium concentration could be sensed by a variety of epithelial and mesenchymal cells through activation of the G-protein coupled calcium-sensing receptor. |

2019 Event Directions
The event will be held in Hoffman Hall, on the PSU campus, which is located at 1833 SW 11th Ave in downtown Portland. Parking is Pay to Park (city owned), please see Portland State's parking-transit page for details. The Portland Streetcar (all lines) also goes right to the heart of campus, and drops off a few blocks from Hoffman Hall. Entering "Hoffman Hall" on Google Maps should give you the right directions!
We strongly recommend taking public transit or carpooling as parking is often difficult.
I want to go!
That's wonderful news! Let us know you're coming so we can have an estimate on turnout.
I want to help!
We're glad to hear it! If you're involved in STEM at PSU and you'd like to run a session, please fill out the Session Volunteer form. We'll have a form for all other volunteers soon.
I still have questions!
If you've still got questions, please click the below Contact Us! button and shoot our organizers an email.
Thanks for visiting, see you there!
